A delightful accident today – I stumbled across a manuscript online that showed one of the characters with a nice long beard, and it was braided! The Mittelalterliche Handschriften collection at the Goethe Universität in Frankfurt am Main contains a manuscript with Shelf mark Ms. germ. qu. 13 titled Salman und Morolf, and was published in Germany in 1479. So here’s some proof for a 15th C beard style. Folio 4r and 16v. (Well, yeah, most of the other beards were shorter, and not braided, but don’t take the joy away yet.)
And did I mention bycockets too?
